Hello! I'm Shaun
an Electrical Engineer in Training (EIT)
Portfolio
As an Electrical Engineer, I thrive on the entire design cycle, from coding and circuit development to crafting the final product. Explore my work to see how I combine technical precision with a passion for building innovative projects.
FPGA/CPLD Development
I was directly responsible for programming and validating the safety systems for an industrial laser, which required minimizing shutdown time to protect users from the Class 4 beam. To achieve the required instantaneous response, I developed and implemented safety interlocks utilizing a Complex Programmable Logic Device (CPLD), drastically reducing the latency to ensure immediate shutdown upon a safety breach.
Embedded Devices
I designed and programmed embedded control systems for spectrometers using STM32 microcontrollers, specializing in precise motor controls and feedback loops. These systems managed both standard stepper motors and high-precision piezoelectric motors capable of sub-30 nm steps. All associated PCBs were designed in compliance with CE standards and requirements, ensuring global regulatory readiness.
Hydroponics
As a final project for the Robotics course at Algonquin, me and a classmate designed and built a fully automated hydroponics system. Utilizing a Raspberry Pi and a couple of Microchip PIC's, the system takes a variety of measurements (pH, PPM, Temperature, Water Level) and displays them to the user on an touch user interface. The system controlls each rail independantly. How much daylight and water each rail gets can be adjusted through the user interface. Through the system settings the user can set a Min/Max pH and a min PPM. If the measured values exceed these ranges parastaltic pumps will add nutrients, pH Up, or pH Down to bring the water resovoir back into the set parameters.
Wire Harness
Tasked with modernizing an industrial laser, I performed a complete wire harness redesign with a focus on regulatory readiness. A primary challenge involved ensuring intensive EMI shielding to maintain signal integrity against powerful electromagnetic fields. The project successfully resulted in a production-ready design where all components were RoHS compliant, ensuring comprehensive adherence to CE standards and safety requirements.
LED Controller
Built a little led ring utilizing a PIC12F1840 and a series of SK6812 leds. I believe I had bit banged out the signal neccessary to set the led colours. This was before I had learned circuit design and am currently revisiting the project to make some halloween decorations.
About Me
Welcome! I'm an Electrical Engineer who thrives on designing and building things from the ground up. You can often find me deep in a text editor solving a programming challenge, or in my workshop meticulously designing circuits, tinkering with microcontrollers, and crafting items using 3D printing and laser etching. For me, the process of turning an initial idea into a functional, tangible reality—digital or physical—is endlessly rewarding.
Outside of my technical pursuits, I love to escape into a good sci-fi or fantasy novel and spend time relaxing with my best pal, Captain Flynt (my dog!). I also enjoy kicking back to watch a great film or TV series. I believe that having diverse interests, from the technical to the imaginative, makes for a better problem-solver and a more engaged engineer.
